Dear Reader,
Walking by the Opera House, here in Sarasota, the other day, made me smile and remember years back, when my father-in-law and I had an unforgettable evening out…
I really need to get out more. I went to the Opera (L'amore dei tre re) the other night with Francis, my father-in-law, and after the second act, I telephoned my husband to come and pick us up because I thought it was the end of the performance. But it wasn't--there was a third act. It was a little humiliating when we realized that everyone else had disappeared from the outside tables and the last call lights were flashing. I quickly sent my husband home and told him to expect another call shortly. He was laughing and my father-in-law and I were sprinting, with only seconds to spare, before they closed the theater doors.
Okay, the program did clearly say "Tragic Poem in Three Acts, sung in Italian" but in my defense, King Archibaldo strangled the princess Fiora to death and carried her off at the end of the second scene. The timpani's pounded out a majestic finish, the audience stood up and applauded. It seemed like a logical time to end. I know I was satisfied. And if that excuse doesn't satisfy you that I'm not a totally uncultured woman, this was the first time either of us had been to the opera.
All in all I think the two of us should be very proud of our first opera outing. Not only were we both deeply moved by the performances, we managed to take a tragedy (L'amore dei tre re) and turn it into a comedy.
Thanks for reading with me. It's so good to read with friends like you.
