Dear Reader,
Even though it was 58 years ago when my parents gave me a pink Barbie convertible--but no Barbie doll (last Friday's column)--I've been just a little peeved about it all these years. If Mom and Dad were still here, for sure I'd ask, "What's up? A Barbie car, but no Barbie?" Apparently I'm not the only "child" who feels they missed out on the toy they dreamed of when they were young.
Thanks to these readers who shared some of their toy-less memories (and be sure to check out today's fun giveaway)...
"Suzanne, I've never written to you before but your story about the Barbie car and no Barbie (or Ken!), to ride in it just made me laugh out loud. My husband said, "What are you reading over there?" When I was a girl I ALWAYS wanted an Easy-Bake Oven, and was always told they were too expensive. I've often thought I should have bought one for my nieces when they were little, just so I could bake in it. Enjoy your Barbie (and car)! I had one of the green convertibles and I loved it for years. Thanks so much for your fun columns and especially the book reviews, I love them!" -- Jill W.
"I truly enjoy your daily column...so many of them resonate my own thoughts and feelings. Wouldn't it be amazing if we could all 'teleport' to a coffee shop to share in person? I'm 65 and I'll never forget it was Silly Putty my mother REFUSED to buy." -- Joyce
"I enjoyed and identified with your nostalgic shopping story, especially the Barbie part. I lost my Barbie in a car fire on the Pennsylvania turnpike while visiting my mother's family upstate. I was the one who spotted the smoke coming from under the seat. Unfortunately, I was also one of those 'Are we there yet?' children, so I was instructed to go to sleep. I was also travelling with my beloved Barbie (in her black plastic case with room for her clothes and accessories), and five puppies that were going to new homes. Luckily, I was an annoyingly, persistent, little girl so my parents eventually pulled over and we all escaped a fiery death. We had only one casualty--Barbie. I know we made the right choice to sacrifice our possessions to save ourselves and the puppies, but I always wondered why I never got a new Barbie. I'm reasonably sure that we had insurance.
I have a card that says 'I try not to judge because I am quite messed up myself.' Maybe my parents just didn't get it? Maybe yours didn't either. Anyway, I think your Barbie is long overdue. Enjoy!" -- Jo
