Dear Reader,
When I write, if I want to give my best, I need to get to the place inside of me that's a little vulnerable. It can be scary. Give a lot, put it all out there, and someone may take advantage because some people take all you have to give and give nothing back in return.
But it's worth the risk--giving a little bit of yourself--because usually people give the nicest, most meaningful gifts back. They share a story, maybe something that hasn't come to mind for years. A story about the funny thing that happened when their grandfather was still alive, they remember--and I feel laughter in-between the lines they've written to me.
Or maybe it's a confession, something they needed to say out loud so they could ease the pain. I hear them crying and in a reply, I reassure them that there are times when none of us do the right thing, including me. And we silently cry together.
Writing has taught me how to let go and readers have given me a reason to give.
Book club reader Maria writes...
"Good morning Suzanne, sometimes when you write a piece, I think, 'Wait is this my soul-sister?'
I so can relate to [a recent post]. My absolute comfort food is chocolate chip cookies! I knew you'd like that one. I make them, eat them, and sometimes share them with someone around me that just needs a cookie.
When my day is going crazy or my mood feels low, I reach for a creative outlet. During a hectic day this past holiday, I ran off to the craft store and bought some unfinished wooden pieces and painted. Boy, it calmed me down, gave me peace, and quieted my mind. It brought me such joy.
I had written to you a while ago about expanding my knitting projects, reading a line at a time, and quieting the perfectionist in me....well, I'm just completing a baby blanket and when I looked down last night at it, I saw a few minor mistakes in my stitches. I laughed and thought of my email to you and said, 'Another rustic one' and carried on. Thanks for helping me to laugh and see the sunny side of things. -- Maria M.
Thanks for reading with me. It's so good to read with friends.
Gratefully,
Suzanne Beecher
