Dear Reader,
This coming Monday inspiration will strike, and you will start working on a column to submit to this year's 13th Annual Write a DearReader Contest! Anyone can enter. Don't be shy if you don't think of yourself as a writer. I started the contest thirteen years ago, especially for people who've never written.
If you're looking for a topic to write about, today's email from Jack, a reader at the book club, could be your inspiration. Like Jack, do you break the rules when you're following a recipe? Or you might write about your worst disaster in the kitchen. How about the time you bought store-made potato salad, cut up a hard boiled egg and arranged it on top to make it look homemade. Do you have a favorite apron? Do you dance in the kitchen while the mixer is whirling around?
And if you're looking for something to bake this weekend, Jack, reminds us that the Snickerdoodles recipe I posted from Jennifer, another reader at the book club, is an absolute, his-grandkids-love-it-winner!
"Suzanne, I just stored Jennifer G's Snickerdoodles recipe in my recipe folder. I wanted to tell you that I asked my wife to put chocolate chips in the Snickerdoodles. She did, and now the grandkids always want them that way. Try it!"--Jack C.
JENNIFER'S SNICKERDOODLES
1 cup butter
3/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar (this is my secret to making soft cookies)
2 large eggs
3 cups flour
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 tablespoons sugar
3 teaspoons cinnamon
Preheat oven to 350°F.
Mix butter, 1-1/2 cups sugar, 1 tsp of vanilla extract and eggs thoroughly in a large bowl.
Combine flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt in a separate bowl. Blend dry ingredients into butter mixture. Chill dough, and chill an ungreased cookie sheet for about 10-15 minutes in the fridge.
Meanwhile, mix 3 tablespoons sugar, and 3 teaspoons cinnamon in a small bowl. Scoop one inch globs of dough into the sugar/cinnamon mixture. Coat by gently rolling balls of dough in the sugar mixture.
Place on chilled ungreased cookie sheet, and bake 10 minutes.
Thanks for reading with me. It's so good to read with friends.
