Dear Reader,
Finally there are Christmas lights in my yard this year. It's truly a Christmas miracle! Because I always "wanted" to, but never "got-around" to, putting up lights. So this year, when the urge first came over me, which was two weeks before Halloween, I decided I didn't care that it was still October. I'd better do it now, or it wouldn't happen. (Kind of like lining my kitchen cupboards with shelf paper. If I don't do it when I move in, it probably won't ever happen.)
Strings of miniature yellow and purple lights are swagged over my fence, and draped over the foliage in front of my house. I figured yellow and purple lights were a safe choice, because they could be considered Halloween colors, Thanksgiving colors, and I'd ride right through Christmas!
Breaking the rules--holiday lights in October, inspired me to make some other holiday changes this season, too. When I went to get my Christmas decorations out of storage, I left some boxes behind. My Christmas boxes are filled with tradition: the ceramic tree with lights, my grandmother's round poinsettia trays, stockings to hang by the chimney with care, tree decorations I've used for years, a rocking horse and the list goes on. But I decided if I wanted to add some new traditions, I'd have to make room for them and let go of some of the old.
And I'm okay with that. In fact, I'm excited to see what other new traditions show up this year.
Thanks for reading with me. It's so good to read with friends.
Happy Holidays,
Suzanne Beecher
