Dear Reader,
A reader remembers when...
"Hi Suzanne, I know I'm too late to enter the hot water bottle giveaway, but I wanted you to know this email made my day. I've been away from work and computers for a week. My husband got sick and had to spend some time in the hospital. Things are getting back to normal now. Reading your message this morning brought smiles to my face.
Growing up Mom always had a hot water bottle in our home. My sister and I always laughed at that ugly thing! I'll never forget the year our power went out for hours. No power, means no heat of course. We cooked with gas, so my mom turned our oven on and opened the door. We got some heat from that, but it wasn't long before we complained that our hands and feet were cold.
My mom pulled out not one, but three hot water bottles! She boiled water on our gas stove and gave each of us our own hot water bottle. Our hands, and of course our feet were soon warm. We never laughed about hot water bottles again. When asked why she had extras, my mother replied, 'A lady should always have her own hot water bottle,' and since she had two girls she bought one for each of us, knowing they would come in handy one day.
I guess I better go out and buy one for myself, and I think I'll pick up one for my daughter also.
Thanks for the memories,"--Lolita McMillan
(Suzanne replies:) I'm glad to hear your husband is on the mend. Your mother was right when she said, "A lady should always have her own hot water bottle." I own three, just for me. Thanks for sharing your memories. Have a wonderful, toasty-warm weekend.
