Dear Reader,
A six foot Cat in the Hat, colored flags zigzagging and hanging down from my dining room ceiling, handmade letters of the alphabet posted on the walls, chocolate cupcakes with brand new crayons standing at attention (don't miss the photos), red dessert paper plates dressed up to look like an apple for the teacher on the first day of school, grilled burgers, homemade potato salad, crock pot beans, deviled eggs, and even a special guest, Mrs. Whackamore, attended our family's Back to 'Shocol' Party last weekend.
I never need a reason to bring my family together for a Sunday noon meal, but it's definitely even more fun when I create a theme and the meal becomes a party. My family walks through the door and "Wow!" the decorations and homespun creativity set the stage for another memorable day at Grandma's house.
My husband always helps me decorate, but this time he was the hit of the party--the main event. After a trip to Goodwill and trying on several outfits, he finally fit into a size 20 dress, then he picked out a gaudy looking, green purse (that he filled with new school supplies). Together with the gray wig he'd ordered online, my fuchsia lipstick, and a green "whackamore" ruler, he suddenly appeared after dessert calling out the grandchildren's names, asking them if they were ready for school, and introducing "herself" as their new teacher. It was hilarious!
The story of our Back to 'Shocol' Party is really found in the pictures, so don't miss them. See Mrs. Whackamore, and the other party decorations at:
