"Hi, Suzanne,
I've been mulling over last Monday's column about the woman and the umbrella. Thank you for sparking me to remember one of the most important lessons I've ever learned--that is, to listen to the spoken words and then listen beyond what is actually said, to what the person's heart is saying.
When my dad died after a very long illness, my mother asked if I thought she should get a manicure before the funeral. Now, understand, she had probably never gotten a professional manicure in her life, and is not someone who dresses up much. So I replied that I didn't think it was something she had to worry about, since she had so many other things to do just then. Her crestfallen expression let me know that I had blown it. I realized she was looking for my approval to do something that would make her feel pretty, feminine and pampered--all things that she had simply not had time, or energy for, in years while she had lovingly cared for Daddy. The next morning over breakfast, I asked her what I could do to give her enough time to go and get a manicure before the visitation. She lit up! After assigning me a few tasks, she headed off to have her nails done. Believe me, she glowed when she returned, and she's had her nails done on a regular basis ever since. I'm so grateful that she does this small thing that makes her feel so good."
