Dear Reader,
I don't like to do complaint columns because there are so many little things that go wrong in a day, it's better not to concentrate on them. It's healthier and more fun to pay attention to the little gems in my day. Having said that, I have to complain today--just a little bit.
RETURNS: it's the new entry on my weekly to-do list. I even have a special bin in the kitchen where I store the irritating items, and unfortunately, I rarely see the bottom of the bin. These items aren't labeled "Returns" because I've changed my mind; they're defective, spoiled, have missing parts, or the shells are so thin that when I reached for one, my finger went right through it--I'm talking about eggs today.
The incredible, edible egg--something is terribly wrong. When I was baking chocolate chip cookies to send out to readers, and I reached for an egg in the carton, my finger went right through the shell. Five times I tried to take an egg out of the box, and five times my finger slid right through the shell. Unbelievable! I examined the rest of the eggs in the carton and the shells were so paper-thin I could almost see right through them. So what's up with eggs now?
When I Googled 'thin egg shells' I discovered that apparently, like me (I have osteoporosis), chickens need calcium and vitamin D to produce thick shells, and some chicken farmers, or more likely conglomerates, have decided to save money and cut down on how much calcium and vitamin D they give to chickens.
So back to the store I'll go today, egg carton in hand. I realize it's probably not worth my time and gas to return oranges that don't taste like oranges, packages of rice that were moldy inside, and now thin eggs. But sometimes you have to draw the line--and for this baker, it's paper-thin eggs. Thanks for listening, and be careful out there with your eggs.
Thanks for reading with me. It's so good to read with friends.
