Dear Reader,
Seven hundred and seventy-one pages? Oh my! I never pay any attention to the number of pages in a book when I put it on hold at the library, but perhaps I should. I'm a 325 page girl--anything over 325 pages is problematic for me.
A big, fat book, it's too heavy to hold. I'm 5'2", 108 pounds. The 771 page book I brought home with me weighs 2-1/2 pounds. So I'm carrying a (half-full) 5-pound bag of sugar around with me wherever I go. But I must admit, the writing style of the author--it's oh so sweet. It's what attracted me to the book in the first place, when I read a sample online. But I'm still having trouble finding a comfortable way to read this heavy, literary, confectionery treat.
It's too heavy to hold in the morning when I'm drinking my one-and-only cup of coffee for the day. My coffee mug in one hand, means I can't juggle 771 pages in the other. It's too tiring, and if I rest the book on top of a pillow, sitting on my lap, I can just barely make out those teeny, tiny words, because the print is out of the range of my reading glasses.
Big fat books, they can be sweet and for sure, they're impressive. When I took the 771 page book along with me to the hairdresser, the woman with the tint on her hair, who was waiting for the "ding" was mighty impressed. Right out loud, she announced what she was thinking, "Wow, that's a big book. You must be very smart. Are you a professor at the college?"
"No, I'm not. And I'm not really that smart, because if I were I'd be reading big fat books on an e-reader." And maybe soon I will. It's my birthday next week and after I blow out the candles perhaps my e-reader wish will come true.
Thanks for reading with me. It's so good to read with friends.

AUTHORBUZZ: THE NEW ME (Fiction) by Mary Marcus
Harriet is fed up. She's in her early forties, her kids have left for college, her long marriage to Jules feels worn out; her cable TV show has lost its sizzle and she longs to leave LA for New York. Then one day she meets Lydia, a gorgeous woman in her twenties who reminds her so much of her long ago self. It's obvious Jules likes Lydia too. It slowly dawns on Harriet Lydia could be "the new me."
