Dear Reader,
Happy Holidays and thanks for writing. Thank you, too, to everyone who sent a Christmas card my way. I sure do appreciate it.
My hot water bottle columns inspired these emails...
"I shot straight back to childhood in Kentucky after reading your blog about hot water bottles. My hot water was fashioned in the familiar shape and material, but it was also a calm shade of blue and had a raised image of Little Bo Peep and her sheep on its face. I remember the soothing image because this hot water bottle always came to rest on my pillow when I had an earache (a frequent visitor when I was a child). My grandmother had given me this hot water bottle when I was a very little girl, and in the midst of an avalanche of lacy dresses and tiny patent leather shoes (I was the first granddaughter), my mother thought it was an unimaginative, no fun intended gift. However, although I have no memory of the adorable clothes and baby toys, I fondly recollect the comforting feel of Bo Peep's warmth diminishing the pain in my ear. I'm 60 years old now and was delighted to find this surprise ticket back home in your email. The farther away the past seems to get, the more I appreciate a free ride back into its embrace. Thank you!"

"I'm so happy to read your endorsement of hot water bottles. I've been using one every night, all winter long for the last three years. For some strange reason I decided that I could get along without using one this year. Maybe it was because I'd decided they were only for 'old people,' or maybe I'd just decided to tough it out. Whatever the reason was, there it sits in the bathroom closet feeling abandoned and lonesome. I am getting it out today from it's summer spot and tonight I will be snuggling up with it by my shoulder on the cold side of the bed. Thank you for giving me permission!"--Betty H.
Congratulations to Ann Bresnan, the hot water bottle winner. Snuggle up Ann and stay warm!
Thanks for reading with me. It's so good to read with friends.
