Dear Reader,

It was a Dino Dinner Party and it's gonna be a Dino Weekend. My husband and I are flying to Chicago with our two grandsons, Paul (age 6) and James (age 4) to visit both the Field Museum and the Science and Industry Museum. The anticipation for the trip has been an experience all its own. I didn't want my son and daughter-in-law to be listening to my grandsons repeatedly inquiring, "How many days until we go to Chicago?" So I saved the big announcement for this past Sunday. Which only left four days until--"Yes, today is the day!"

Earlier in the week, I sent the boys a card, "You're invited to a Surprise Dinner this Sunday," and when they came to dinner there was a 4 foot 6 inch dinosaur seated at the table waiting for them. My husband and I told the boys about the trip, and while we ate lunch we watched videos from the museums on a nearby screen. Today we're off to see Sue, 42-feet-long and 12-feet-high, the largest, most complete and best preserved Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ever discovered.

I even ordered Field Museum dinosaur T-shirts for the boys and I to wear on the plane. We'll look ridiculous, but we'll be having the time of our lives. Yes, Grandma, Grandpa, Paul and James--we're off to see the dinosaurs. Look out Chicago, here we come!

Dear Reader,

I'm enjoying reading the entries from this year's Write a Dear Reader Contest, but I'm also frustrated because they are so darn good this year. Thank you to everyone who entered. When I invited author Marilyn Tam to write a guest column I had no idea that she was a regular reader at our book club. I had just finished reading her book, The Happiness Choice, enjoyed it, so I invited her to share a little happiness with us today.

Marilyn Tam grew up as an abused and neglected child in Hong Kong. She found her life purpose at age eleven when she found out as bad as her life was, she was much better off than her classmate, Rebecca. Wanting to help others and to right the wrongs, she left home as a teen to come to America alone to study.

Marilyn became a business leader (CEO Of Aveda, President of Reebok and Vice President of Nike) and global humanitarian. She shares in her latest book, The Happiness Choice how you can live a life of happiness, health and success. It's her way of giving back to the world for all the blessings she's received.

Naked ladies. A long row of them are standing tall on thin stems topped with elegant pink blooms, leafless and proud next to the bordering ground cover of purple lantanas along my driveway. Naked ladies, what a funny and appropriate name for the pink amaryllis lilies in my garden.

Earlier in the spring, long blade-like leaves crowded in the same space the lilies now command. The leaves died off and for months there was nothing but dirt, then suddenly within a week, a parade of lovely lilies are now lining my driveway.

I think writing is like that. I feverishly produce lots of words, and then I drag myself away from the computer. After what seems like months, actually only hours or a day, but with a due date time takes on a different dimension, I come back to the words and voila! I see a pattern, a thread that had mysteriously embedded itself in the greenery, and now I'm ready to tease out the theme and make the garden bloom with a meaningful story.

But I should back up; there must be a bulb or a seed for the leaves to grow from. It is the same for writing. Inside of me is an idea that has found fertile soil, and with nurture it springs forth vibrant and ready to claim its place in the sun. It is something that I am passionate about, that I am yearning to share. The fruitful ground is my computer where my thoughts can be made visible. I am eager to give away the insights and wisdom I've learned from painful experience and wise experts so that others can avoid the misery on their way to love, happiness and success. Why should others have to suffer needlessly? I've already paid the price with my ordeals on the way to inner peace, love, joy and prosperity. After the initial outpouring of expression, a pause sets in--sometimes it is natural and other times I have to create the interruption. Like the lily, the writing has to have a quiet interlude between the leaves in spring and the eventual summer blooming of flowers.

The words look different when I come back to them; they are like the tender flower stalks emerging from the earth. I clear away the dead leaves of excess words, water and fertilize the idea buds, and soon there is a neat procession of words that tell the tale I've been holding inside. Glorious, delicate and strong at the same time, good writing and naked ladies are like that.

Dear Reader,

The gleam in my grandson's eyes. I know how he feels. I recognize the look.

His lips slightly parted, eyes as big as the first peek on Christmas morning. He's affected like me when I'm looking around a flower nursery. It's as if a rainbow entered my soul and a pot of gold is within me. I want to get lost in this candy store of color.

"Can I look around Grandma?" His voice trailing off, my grandson is already halfway down an aisle filled with pansies.

I'm admiring the marigolds. They look healthy, in real good shape. I don't need any in my garden right now, but how can I pass up such healthy looking plants? The leaves are a deep green, no browning, drooping or wrinkling of the leaves. Lucky me. Most people fill their shopping carts with plants whose flowers are at their peak. Gorgeous-looking at the moment, but in a few days the blooms wither and need to be pinched away.

I have a little conversation with some plants that are tipped over. After I set them upright, I check to see if they need water. Sometimes I alert an employee about a plant that desperately needs a drink. They say thank you, but I can tell they think I'm a strange-bird.

I look up and my grandson is standing in front of me balancing a long flat of light pink Vinca. My grandson hasn't checked to see if these beauties need to be planted in full sun, shade, or part-sun/part-shade, he just slides the flat onto the rack underneath our cart. 'Just where are we going to put these plants?' That's what I'm thinking. But I'm sure I'll find a place, I always do. Anyway, how can I say no to a cute little squirt, balancing a long flat of plants? I can't. I can't even talk myself into not buying the marigolds that I don't need.

My grandson and I hurry toward the checkout counter. He stops along the way in front of the yellow daisies. I see that look in his eyes again. I look away. I have no willpower today. We've got to get out of here. We're addicted to the colors, the beauty and the peace we feel when we're surrounded by plants. Offer us a chair, we could sit here all afternoon. But oh my, that would be an expensive afternoon.

A little pink nose with an uneven, tiny black spot on the left side of it was poking through the thin bars. White whiskers were sticking through those bars, too, and the minute I spied the little fellow I knew he was the one. That's the sweet memory I carry with me of when my husband and I adopted Barry, our tuxedo kitty, from the Humane Society two year ago. Even though we were set on adopting an all grown up cat, there was no doubt in my mind, when I saw 8-week old Barry--he was the one.

Instantly a wave of warmth and love filled my heart and I felt like I was being reunited with a lost child. "Where have you been? Let's get you back home."

I had the same feelings this past weekend when I went to the nursery to buy a tree. One of the trees in our yard was falling apart little by little, every time a gusty storm passed through. It's hard for me to part with a tree, but the truth was the tree was dead, and it was time to take it down.

And now it was time to replace it with another tree. I went to the nursery with the idea that I was going to purchase a Tabebuia Chrysotricha tree (Gold tree is the lay-gardener's name for it), but just like the magic I experienced when I first saw Barry, as the clerk and I were headed to the Gold trees, I stopped in front of a Sugar Gum tree and instantly, I was in love. "Let's get you home," I announced to the tree.

I can't explain it, but I felt like hugging my new tree right then and there. The clerk agreed that it was a great tree and it was in beautiful shape, "and what a good price, Suzanne, but don't you want me to show the tree you came to see?" she asked.

"Nope, this is the one," I told her, "I don't need to look any further."

I wanted to take the tree home right away, but it was too big. But I did take a picture with me, and when I was showing it to my husband he could tell I was love struck. "Are you sure you wouldn't like to go visit the tree one more time this afternoon? I'll drive you."

I almost said yes. Thankfully I didn't have to wait too long to see my tree again, it was delivered the next day, and tomorrow is tree planting day. I invite you to celebrate with me. Dear Reader,

People don't win any awards for lounging, but maybe they should. Billee, my Calico cat knew how to do it. I don't. Guilt-free, contentedly curled up, she'd sit in the sun for hours in the middle of my flower garden.

Me--for some reason I feel the need to always be doing something so I can earn my keep. Consequently it takes more effort for me to try to relax, than if I did three loads of laundry--including the ironing, washed the garbage cans, and cleaned out the gutters.

If there's the slightest hint of "doing nothing" in my upcoming plans, it's a prerequisite that I announce to the world that I won't be checked out for long: "I'm just taking a break for a few minutes," I yell to my husband--as if he cares.

It's ridiculous. My husband doesn't care one iota if I'm busy or not. In fact, he says he likes it better when I give in, put on my Pj's and check out and relax, because then he doesn't feel the need to try to keep up with me.

She's written sixteen books, imagine that! Her many awards include the Cartier Diamond Dagger Award for lifetime achievement from the British Crime Writers' Association. But I imagine the opportunity that today's guest author, Sara Paretsky, is most grateful for is being able to work with Chicago teens in the city's most troubled schools, and support local literacy groups.

Learning by Heart

Do you know what? Do you know what?
I have red mittens and you have not!

This couplet was in a book of rhymes and fairy tales given to me by my mother when I was four, to celebrate my new life as a reader. I was so proud of being able to read that I learned all four verses by heart and marched around the apartment chanting them over and over, until everyone in the family shouted at me to stop. Except my mother.

Mother knew dozens, maybe hundreds, of poems by heart. She loved having that well of language at her command, and wanted to instill it in her five children. She used to hold poetry reciting competitions, herself paired with the youngest, my older brother and I another team.

Because of my mother, the beauty of language, the play of other people's words, fill my head whenever I'm trying to describe an event, whether to friends or on the page.

When V I Warshawski tries to rid herself of the bloody bodies she's encountered in my upcoming book, Critical Mass, the first words that come to me are from that avatar of bloodiness, Lady Macbeth. Shakespeare used most of the good lines first, which makes it harder for the rest of us. And even if he hadn't already said, "all the perfumes of Arabia/ will not sweeten this little hand," the language doesn't suit V I Warshawski. The image does, though, and as she bathes, scrubbing her skin until it's raw, Shakespeare's imagery underlies the words I choose for her.

My own best writing comes with an ear cocked toward poets, listening for the cadence, the ideal rhythm of the English language. In Critical Mass, when V I is floating in Lake Michigan to undo the mortal weariness of her day, what comes to me, her chronicler, are lines from Tennyson's Ulysses: "The long day wanes/The slow moon climbs: the deep/moans round with many voices...my purpose holds/to sail beyond the sunset and the baths/of all the western stars, until I die."

The words create in me a sense of a precarious balance, the knife point between grief and hope. That's what V I is feeling in the dark waters of the lake, the grief over what can't be undone, the gathering of her strength to continue on her quest. My challenge is to put those feelings into language as evocative as Tennyson's, but to make it my own.

Dear Reader,

When I was a kid I wished my mom or dad would have walked up to me and simply said, "I'm proud of you Suzanne." No strings attached. It would have been so comforting and reassuring to know they were in my corner--no matter what.

Maybe you're supposed to outgrow the need to hear someone say "I'm proud of you," and in a way I have, because now I can say the words to myself and it's enough. But then again, it's still a big deal and means a lot when I hear those words from someone, even today. Especially when my husband says he's proud of me, I'm glowing.

My Grandpa Hale didn't have to say a word to let me know how proud he was of me. Every afternoon when he got home from driving the gas truck for the county road crews, after he got cleaned up, he'd settle in to watch the Tom and Jerry cartoon show. (Maybe that's where I get my quirky side from?) It was Grandpa's way of letting down after a long day. Together we'd sit side-by-side on the sofa. Grandpa would look at me and smile, while gently patting his hand on my knee. Yes, I knew my grandpa was proud of me.

I guess maybe I'm thinking about all of this lately, because I spend so much time with my grandchildren and I want to be mindful of opportunities to let them know how proud I am of them--no strings attached.
