When I was ten years old I spent hours riding my bike in the vacant parking lot next to our house, pretending to be a secret agent (my favorite show was The Man From Uncle.) At the age when I was playing super spy, today's guest author, Kim Fay, had already begun her writing career.

Writers spend a lot of time alone. And when I say a lot, I mean a lot. For the majority of us, the ability (desire) to be by ourselves is simply part of our genetic makeup. I started writing fiction when I was ten, and unlike most kids my age, I could spend hours holed up in my closet-turned-office, pounding away on the manual Smith-Corona my dad passed on to me from his college years.

Give me a week to myself to write, and I'm a happy camper. At the same time, I also write because of the many ways it allows me to socialize out in the world. I love my writing critique group, book festivals and Twitter, not just because I get to blather on about my writing, but because I get to discuss the ideas in my writing--ideas so near and dear to me that I felt compelled to write entire books about them. The recent discovery of an ancient Khmer city in Cambodia thrilled me because such a discovery is the foundation for my debut historical novel, and it gives me yet one more way to continue the conversation about the controversies of art ownership, cultural appropriation, colonialism and personal obsessions that I started with the novel.

My attraction to the social side of writing came to me early. Around the same time that I discovered the magic of storytelling I also discovered the magic of bookstores. I can still picture every bookstore that captured my heart, beginning with the little independent shop in Pioneer Square in Seattle where my dad would take me before Seahawks games in the late 1970s.

The world embraced by that indie bookshop captivated me so much, in fact, that a decade later, right out of college, I found myself working there. By that time, the Elliott Bay Book Company was one of the most respected bookstores in the nation. And it was in that hallowed place that I realized I write for more than one reason. Yes, I write because I must. A day without writing is a day without happiness for me. But I also write because of the people and places it connects me to.

The Elliott Bay Book Company just turned forty, and I flew up from L.A. to attend the anniversary party. I "graduated" from Elliott Bay almost twenty years ago, but as I mingled with former co-workers, I remembered in detail the early morning coffee, late night wine and always, always!, talk about writing and books. Those conversations were the basis for enduring friendships, and as a writer, I can imagine nothing more satisfying than continuing to be a part of those discussions, literally, and also in absentia as readers begin to form their own lifelong bonds with coffee and a chat about one of my books.

"Good morning Suzanne. Thank you for providing a place, through your book club, for readers and authors to connect. I enjoy reading your columns about your everyday life. You are officially the only person I know who actually owns a bubble machine. What a cool idea!

In subscribing to your emails, I noticed a wide variety of genres and authors. Can you share how you choose which author to feature? What are your requirements and prerequisites? I noticed this week you featured one of my favorite mystery writers, Anne Perry. Does the author's personal background affect your choice in any way? After reading virtually all of her work, I was quite surprised to discover Miss Perry actually had a criminal past. I am interested in how a fact like this affects your decision to choose to feature her."

Thanks for asking Margaret, I appreciate you taking the time to write. Choosing the line-up of titles every week for the book club, it's kind of like baking a cake. There's a basic recipe that I've followed since 1999, when I first started the clubs. Though in the beginning, it was more like a box mix, because the first year there was only one book featured each week, and the genre changed each week, too. Now I offer 12 different genres.

My recipe doesn't include researching authors when I'm selecting a book, so actually I wasn't aware of Anne Perry's past. When I read books I'm hoping to find one that will grab your attention from the beginning. Book club emails are sent out Monday through Friday, so I only have five days to hook 'ya, and if I do (if the book is a good match for you), then you can reserve a copy at your local library, or buy a copy at your favorite book seller.

My mission from the beginning was (and still is), to make it easy and fun for people to find the time to read and to connect them with their local library. And to be able to introduce folks to authors they might not be aware of, and to give them the opportunity to talk to authors. That's why I feature AuthorBuzz and guest authors in my column.

There's a little bit of crazy-fun in the book club, too. But then what would you expect from a woman who runs an electric bubble machine in front of her house? My daily column features some weird giveaways. I've shopped for socks for readers, given away heating pads for their cats, I bake chocolate chip cookies and send them overnight to readers each month, and of course I've given away bubble machines, too.

So that's the basic recipe. I'm simply looking for great books to share with readers and hopefully I bring some fun into their lives, too.

I was sitting in a restaurant having breakfast and I noticed the people at the table next to me were playing cards. Nobody else seemed to be paying any attention to them, but I was intrigued. So I pulled up a chair, sat down at their table and met Susan and Dan, who say they always play cards while they're waiting for their food.

Susan and Dan started playing cards in restaurants after a trip to Europe. They said it's common in Europe to see people playing games while waiting for their meals. What do they play? Well, that all depends on the restaurant and the speed of the service. If they don't expect to wait too long, Crazy Eights, otherwise it's Gin Rummy.

They're a competitive couple, who've been married "forever" Susan said, so they always play for the check, even though it all comes out of the same pot. "It makes for a more interesting game." Susan's been on a losing streak for three weeks now, but she's confident that her luck is bound to change soon--so she's planning on heading to pricier restaurants.

When their kids were little, the whole family would play cards, and sometimes their kids were embarrassed by their parents' behavior, especially if they had invited a friend to dinner. One time they took a board game into the restaurant, but in order to win the game you had to yell out the answer. Their family made quite a scene, but the waitstaff loved them, and said they were welcome back anytime.

I appreciate it when people go outside of their comfort zones and do unusual things. It makes the world much more interesting--and it makes for a great column, too.

Dear Reader,

When I was a kid and my parents asked me to do something, I'd usually tell them, "I don't feel like it now. I'll do it later." I have to admit, if they'd let me wait until I "felt" like doing something, especially when I was a teenager, it might have never gotten done.

But now that I'm a mature adult, I've learned to recognize that if I don't "feel" like doing certain things right away; maybe I shouldn't. In fact, sometimes the most direct route to my creativity and to getting the job done is waiting until I do "feel" like it.

For instance, when I have a writing deadline that's two days away and I haven't started working on anything yet, and I put pressure on myself to sit down and try to write; I'll most likely be looking long and hard at a blank screen. Because I'm just not ready. I don't "feel" like saying anything.

From experience, I realize that if I just can't seem to get in the groove to get started, I need not worry about it. Because subconsciously my mind is already working hard--thinking through the creative task--and when the time is right, it will give me a signal and then the rest of me can jump into the act.

Yes, I do believe it's true...creative ideas come to those who learn to wait until they "feel" like it.

When I invite an author to write a guest column at the book club, one of the things I ask them "not" to write about is their book. Because I can easily find that information on the internet. Instead, what I'm hoping they'll write are words from the heart, and that's exactly what Jessica Brockmole, author of Letters from Skye, shares with us today.

Pull up a chair, pour a cup of coffee, and spend some time in Jessica Brockmole's kitchen.

This time of year, I'm in the kitchen a lot. With baskets of produce fresh-picked from my garden or from one of our local farms, I set about making pickles. I'll pickle just about anything that comes across my table: cucumbers of all shapes and sizes, green beans, okra, jalapenos, banana peppers, red peppers, carrots, tiny green grape tomatoes. When pickling season is upon me, my writing partner warns nearby veggies to run and hide. She teases that, instead of writing, I hide behind my stacks of jars in a brine-scented fit of procrastination.

I can see why she thinks that. It's so easy to say, "I'll write tomorrow," while eyeing a gleaming little pile of green tomatoes, smelling fresh and warm the way only tomatoes can. It's so easy to put off a chapter and escape to that steamy, vinegary kitchen.

And an escape is exactly what it is. Amid the swirling scents of dill and garlic and pepper, my head begins to clear. The pots bubble softly, the scrubbed jars wait in a row. And I think. There's something about the regularity of my knife against the cutting board, slicing cucumbers, the neat stacks of okra or green beans lining the jars, the quiet plink as each lid tightens and seals, something about the process that soothes. I can untangle plot snarls, I can ponder character arcs, I can plan twists. It's not procrastination; it's part of the process.

Even when the gardens grow brown, I can still find solace in the kitchen. In between bouts of writing, I cook. Making bread is a particular favorite, as I'm sure the bread-bakers among you will understand. Mixing, kneading, shaping. Watching it rise.

Pickling, baking, cooking, they're all neat and orderly processes, between the chopping, the measuring and the constant temperatures. But out of such order, magic happens. That alchemy of taste and smell and flavors crumbling against your tongue. In some ways, much like writing. The expected tidiness of sentences, the unexpected flavor of the words when chosen and lined up. From raw ingredients, something special can be made. Maybe that's why I find such comfort in the kitchen. I can think as I prepare. And come winter, I can take down a jar of pickles and escape again by unscrewing the lid.

"Suzanne, Just wanted to tell you that I made your marinated shrimp last night for dinner. They were DELICIOUS!! Everyone raved about them and wanted to know where I got the recipe. I told them from my friend Suzanne! I have been reading your daily reads since 2000 and think of you as my best 'internet' friend!

Marinated Shrimp

3 cloves garlic, minced
1/4 cup tomato sauce
1/3 cup olive oil
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (don't leave this out, it does NOT make the marinade hot, only gives it a great flavor)
2 pounds fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined

Stir together in a large bowl the garlic, olive oil, tomato sauce and red wine vinegar. Season with the basil, salt and cayenne pepper. Add the shrimp and stir to coat. Then I dumped the marinade and shrimp mixture into a large zip lock bag. It took up less space in the frig and I could tip the bag upside down to really get all of the shrimp covered. Marinate for 30 minutes to an hour--at least.

Preheat the grill--medium heat. After the mixture has marinated, thread the shrimp onto skewers. I put 5 or 6 on each one. Pierce twice, once near the tail and once near the top. Discard marinade. Lightly oil the grill grate. Cook the shrimp on the preheated grill for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until it turns pink.
