Dear Reader,
"Who plays the bass cello? I saw it sitting by the bookcase (of the Bingo Birthday Party photo you posted) and I don't remember any columns about it. You are so creative with your house."
Book club reader Carolyn Hoe's question made me think of the therapeutic, declutter your house question: "If you only had two minutes to pick out things in your home that you wanted to take with you (because a disaster was headed your way), what would you grab?"
Certainly grabbing the huge bass cello, sitting in the corner of my dining room, wouldn't be an option. But my husband and I would surely miss it if it were gone. It's one of the many unexpected furnishings in our home that give visitors pause, when they first walk in and look around. Our decorating style is an eclectic mix of things that make us smile and they enrich our lives. A wedding dress in the bathroom, a circus tent mallet by the fireplace, antique flashlights and aviator goggles, just to name a few. And there's always been a plethora of musical instruments, enough for a one man band, scattered throughout our home. A keyboard, four guitars, two electric bass guitars, two different kinds of drums, and the big bass cello.
Since my husband tells people he 'dabbles in music' you'd think his interest in music was just a hobby, and I did too. Until one afternoon, my father-in-law unearthed a poster that let me in on a little secret. My husband and I have been married thirty-six years and I had no idea that he used to be a teenage 'rock star,' a bass player in the band, The Elites.
The poster my father-my-law gave me announced:
Dance
The Elites
May 13, 8:30 to 11:30
Maria Gorette Church (Corner Flad Ave and Gilbert Rd)
Admission 75 cents
Five high school friends, one of them my husband, made up the boys in the band. The Elites played around the Madison, Wisconsin area for two years, including the University of Wisconsin's Summer Music Camp.
So what else hasn't my husband told me about? Do me a favor and take a look at the photo from my Bingo birthday party and maybe you'll see something else I should ask my husband about.
