Dear Reader,
Meet co-authors Karen Mack and Jennifer Kaufman.
Karen Mack, a former attorney, is a Golden Globe award-winning film and television producer. Jennifer Kaufman is a former staff writer for the Los Angeles Times and a two-time winner of the national Penney-Missouri Journalism Award. They both reside in Los Angeles.
Their first co-written novel, Literacy and Longing in L.A. was on the Los Angeles Times bestseller list for 15 weeks reaching Number One, and it won the Best Fiction Award from the Southern California Bookseller's Association. Their second novel, A Version of the Truth, was also on the L.A. Times bestseller list. (I think this working together thing is a good match for these two, don't you?)
Karen and Jennifer have five Advanced Reading Copies of their upcoming book Freud's Mistress to give away to readers. Be the first to read the book. Email: [email protected]
Welcome authors Karen Mack and Jennifer Kaufman...
Around six years ago, we happened to see an article in the New York Times that was buried midway through the paper. The headline was HOTEL LOG HINTS AT ILLICIT DESIRE THAT DR. FREUD DIDN'T REPRESS. The article reported that a German sociologist had finally solved the "Minna" question, a question which has fascinated Freud scholars for the past century. Did Freud have an affair with his wife's younger sister? Now it was settled.
In the summer of 1896, Freud, then forty-two, robust, worldly, urbane, took a trip to Switzerland with the lovely Minna Bernays, who was then thirty-three. The couple stayed at a grand hotel in the Swiss Alps, and the hotel log that they had signed was still there.
The sociologist discovered that not only had they stayed in a double room but Freud had registered them as "Dr. Freud and Frau." Not quite.
This is when we decided to write this book. It was irresistible! The greatest figure in history to explain human sexuality and desire, the seductive, narcissistic genius himself was caught up in a scandalous love affair at the very time he was making his earth-shattering discoveries. And not just any affair. It was one with his wife's sister, whom he called his closest confidante.
The triangle of Freud, his wife, and his wife's sister was provocative on several levels. Aside from the actual affair, we were fascinated how one sister could possibly usurp the life of the other, and how they all lived together in one house. How could this work?
So we finished the book we were working on and spent the next three years reading everything we could about them. We were like anthropologists digging up evidence to recreate the affair. We practically followed Minna and Freud down to his study where his patients lined up to see venerable Dr. Freud.
Which leads us to the question we have for you, dear readers. Everyone has either been in therapy or is currently in therapy, or knows someone who is in therapy. So, if you had the opportunity to dive into Freud's famous couch and could ask him any question, what would it be?
You can e-mail us your answer at [email protected], and our publisher, Amy Einhorn Books, will send the five best entries with an ARC of Freud's Mistress.
* Congratulations to the winners of Guest Columnist Ingrid Thoft's new book Loyalty: Pat Harmer, Patricia Sherzer Marshall, Linda Johnson, Dorie Furman and Val Pearson.
