Dear Reader,
Teaching my grandson Paul to sew is a reciprocal lesson. While I'm teaching Paul how to wind a bobbin, or how to pin material together for stitching, he's reminding me to lighten up and think outside of my usual "sewing box." When you're sewing with a five-year-old, your lesson plan changes from minute-to-minute. I think we're going to be learning the basics, threading the machine and how to pull out stitches that went astray, but Paul decides we should make a "tiny" purse for his mother. The purse we're now working on measures 3 feet x 2 feet, complete with a shoulder strap--and a big button on the front. (The button is a plastic cat food cover with holes poked in it.) "Don't tell Mom," my grandson whispers to me, "I'll tell my mom I'm making her a tiny purse. It will be funny."
Sewing with Paul is a lot of fun, because it's full of surprises and the experience allows me to look at things differently. I suggest we make a quilt after we finish the "tiny" purse. Excited about the idea, Paul decides Barry (my black and white cat) needs a quilt to curl up on when he takes his afternoon nap. "Grandma, Grandma, I have an idea. We should sew a quilt with geckos on it." (Barry likes to chase geckos when we take him out for a walk in the yard.)
I suppose it would be a kitty's dream to be sleeping on top of geckos, but I assured Paul that we wouldn't be able to find any gecko fabric. Not giving up, Paul insisted we look anyway, and he was right. Blue geckos, green geckos, or an assortment in the same pattern. We found three different gecko prints and we're waiting for the material to be delivered. Barry's excited, Paul's excited, and Grandma is amazed at the sewing lessons she's learning from her five-year-old grandson.

Thanks for reading with me. It's so good to read with friends.
