Muffins and Mayhem, Recipes for a Happy (if disorderly) Life
Dear Reader,
Mix the cookies, line the cookie sheet with parchment paper, put the cookie sheet into my oven and set the timer for 8 minutes and 30 seconds. I'm amazed at how much I get done before the bell rings. Then I rotate the cookie sheet (even my new oven won't brown evenly) and then I set the timer for 2 minutes and 30 seconds more.
You'd think I would have thought about this before because I've been doing the same cookie baking routine for years. But this past weekend when I was baking cookies for a reader, after I set the timer for 8 minutes and 30 seconds I sat back down at my writing desk and I was amazed at how much work I got finished before the bell rang and I had to go back into the kitchen.
It's the two minutes here, three minutes there, where my real work seems to get done. If I have too much time to devote to something, I waste most of that time getting ready to do the job and worrying about whether or not I can actually do it. But when I know the timer will ring in 8 minutes 30 seconds--no time to waste--my mind doesn't wander and I get right down to work.
I have a brand new timer to give away to a book club reader. Simply send an email to: contest@dearreader.com
Be sure to include your mailing address in case your name is drawn. The winner will be announced in an upcoming column.
Thanks for reading with me. It's so good to read with friends.
Warmest regards,
Suzanne Beecher
