Muffins and Mayhem, Recipes for a Happy (if disorderly) Life
Dear Reader,
One of the perks of being a grandmother is I can use my grandchildren as an excuse to make May baskets. (Then folks won't think I'm some old lady reverting back to my childhood.) But it's true, making May baskets is one of my fun, childhood memories. Make a cylinder basket out of construction paper, tape a handle on it, add just-picked violets or whatever was blooming, add a couple of pieces of candy, and a small drawing. Then hang the May basket on a neighbor's front door handle, ring the door bell, and scurry away. (Those were the days when most mothers were home during the day.)
So Paul, my four-year-old grandson, and I have been busy making May baskets. We're not using fresh flowers. Instead, we made our flowers out of colored, heavy card stock; I sewed a button in the middle of some of the flowers and Paul added a stick-on center in others. Then we taped a pipe cleaner on the back (for the stem), added some green (Easter) grass, and a small note with Paul's photo and his signature. Paul can print his name, some of the letters might be upside down, but folks will get the idea.
Nine lucky people (Paul's choices), will find a May Basket on their front door handle on May 1st. In the meantime, nine door handles inside my house are decorated for Spring!
