Dear Reader,
In July I took a vacation when our grandchildren from Wisconsin came to visit, but beginning August 30th, I'll be on a two-week "Suzanne" vacation. No schedules, no one to look after or entertain, sleep 'til whenever, read, nap, and no deadlines so I can do a bunch of nothing. In reality, I haven't been able to sleep past 6:30 since I was a teenager, and I doubt whether or not I could actually be a lady of leisure for more than two days. But I am looking forward to the time off because I'll get to write.
Since I write every day, you might be wondering, "How can writing be a vacation?" But I'm talking about a different kind of writing. When my writing brain goes on vacation it loves to play with weird, wacky words, and the wacky words turn into some pretty crazy stuff. Vacation writing is kind of like "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." The writing I do when I'm on vacation is just fooling-around fun, that doesn't have to be polished for anyone else to read.
There's plenty of things happening in the book club while I'm gone, so tune in every day. Guest authors will be writing my column and each author is giving away something unique. The winning Write a Dear Reader Contest columns and their recipes will be featured, too. Read, enter cool giveaways, do a little cooking (try out some of the winning recipes) and if you enjoy reading the guest authors' columns, I know they'd love to hear from you. They will be answering all of their mail.
When I return the fun continues with a "Read to Your Pet" photo contest. Fish, ferret, fowl, dog, cat, or pot bellied pig, whatever kind of pet you have, you could win a Sony Reader. If you haven't had a chance to start reading Muffins and Mayhem yet--get going--so you'll be able to enter the pet photo contest, and solve the Muffins and Mayhem crossword puzzles.
A very big thank you to everyone who entered this year's writing contest. It was so much fun to read the entries and I'll be making some of the recipes soon. I'll talk to you again in two weeks. In the meantime, stop by www.MuffinsandMayhem.com See videos, create your own Cookbook of Memories (featured in Better Homes and Gardens, August 2010), read a chapter from my book and if you request an autographed bookplate, I'll also send you a bookmark for your copy of Muffins and Mayhem. Or if you're giving the book as a birthday or Christmas gift to a friend, tell me their name and I'll include a personal letter. Thank you so much for your emails and for making my work at the book clubs so enjoyable.
Thanks for reading with me. It's so good to read with friends.
Officially on vacation,
Suzanne Beecher
