Dear Reader,
I realize the only way a person can get better at something is if they were worse at it--"before." But sometimes "before" can really be embarrassing and make me squirm.
I asked my writing muse to pull a column I'd written eight years ago and send it to me. A reporter had asked a detailed question and I thought the column would be the perfect response.
It's not unusual any more for reporters to send questions via email. But when I have to type my answers, instead of the reporter asking questions and taking notes--it's kind of like I'm writing part of the story myself. So I feel the need to make sure I deliver a finished product that sounds and looks good, just in case the reporter decides to cut-and-paste chunks of my email into their story. Consequently, I end up spending as much time drafting my answers as if I were working on a column, or material for my second book. (Yes, I've begun again.)
But when I was taking a quick peruse through my old column, 'Oh my gosh,' I couldn't believe it. 'Did this thing really run exactly like this?' I could only hope this was the first draft before editing and corrections. But I knew it wasn't. Nope, this was the real deal, written exactly the way people had read it eight years ago. How embarrassing. I blushed as if it was yesterday's column. But then I recognized the silliness in my reaction and decided to feel grateful that I continue to get better at my craft, and I had the proof right in front of me.
