Dear Reader,
This week is "Ask Suzanne." If you have a question you've always wanted to ask, now's the time. Email your question to me at: [email protected]
Today's questions from readers:
"Suzanne, how do you select books and do you ever take suggestions from book club members?"
It was the number one question. Hundreds of people asked, including Marta Bentley, Connie Norris, Jennifer Golden, Donna O'Connell, Candy Megahan, Barbara Nakajo, Jacqueline Cutty, Bob Pendell and Mitzi Brinkman.
(Suzanne replies)
I know the UPS and Fed Ex delivery people on a first-name basis, because they stop by my office several times a day. Publishers send review copies of books and catalogs that list their upcoming titles. All of the books I receive are entered electronically in our files and someone on my staff reads each book.
If you'd like to suggest a book, I'd love to hear about it. I try to feature a mix of titles, authors, and subjects at the club. I love it when a reader emails and says they discovered a "gem" at the book club and it was the kind of book that normally they wouldn't be interested in reading.
Keith Echrich asked, "Suzanne, what's your favorite reading genre?"
(Suzanne replies) I'll give any book a try, but my favorite genre is nonfiction. Books that make me think and examine the way I interact with people and books that give me insight into situations in the world. I'm always striving to be a better communicator.
Kathy Carroll wanted to know, "Suzanne do you get much reaction to your choices for the book club? Is it mostly positive or do you get any negative reactions? I have to admit that sometimes if the subject of the book for the week doesn't appeal to me, I just delete the email after sampling the first portion."
(Suzanne replies) Kathy, I hear more positive than negative comments about the book choices. I think if a book isn't a good match for someone they hit the delete key, just like you do. And that's exactly what I recommend doing. Keep the book club fun. Read only what you enjoy and please read guilt-free. If you get behind in your emails, for whatever reason, hit that delete key and start fresh with a new book on Monday.
Thanks for asking questions this week. Today's the last day for submitting a question. I'd love to hear from you. I won't be able to personally answer everyone's question, but if I use your question in my column, I'll send you a free book as a thank you.
Thanks for reading with me. It's so good to read with friends.
