A Playboy Until The End
In the early seventies, I teamed up with a college roommate and we formed a guitar duo/comedy act that traveled the country. One of our memorable 'gigs' was playing the Playboy Club circuit. Having then recently graduated from college, I had a very strong impression of the magazine (I only read the articles) and the clubs. And now, I was on center stage. Pretty cool. Denver, L.A., Miami, Chicago, we played the clubs and got to know and date several of the infamous bushy tailed bunnies.
Fast forward to my first novel in a five book Caribbean series, Jamaica Blue, 15 years ago. My protagonist was an entertainment journalist who wrote stories about the seamy underbelly of rock and roll. I had some fun doing research on that series. And as I had planned a book signing tour on the West Coast, I figured that my hero would probably be connected to the Playboy Mansion and Hef. (I'm certain he would have called Hugh Heffner Hef). I assumed Mick Sever, the journalist, would be invited to parties at the popular home. So, I wrote a letter to the Mansion explaining that I wanted to visit. My hubris knows no bounds.
The day before I was to fly out, Mary, his secretary called me on my cell phone. She said Hef was happy to accommodate my visit and would love to have a book signing by the pool. It was, as you can imagine, surrealistic. Topless girls everywhere and Bridget, one of his live-in girlfriends, gave me an hour tour of the grounds.
I was invited back several books later for another memorable experience, and then Mary called one day out of the blue asking me to fly out and talk to a movie producer about a film Hef (yes, I call him Hef) wanted to do called Murder At The Playboy Mansion. He envisioned me as the screenwriter. The movie producer was fired one week after our meeting, so the movie never got made.
The Mansion has been sold, Hef is in his late eighties, and the clubs have ceased to exist decades ago. But I will remain a Playboy till the end. It was an amazing experience.

AUTHORBUZZ: JUST TRY TO STOP ME (Thriller) by Gregg Olsen
I've always wondered why it is that people do the unthinkable. That's what's driven most of my writing in fiction and nonfiction. What is it about a perfect baby that morphs him or her into a monster? In my new thriller, notorious serial killer Brenda Nevins is on the run and looking for revenge. She's hatched a deadly plan that will maximize pain while increasing her infamy.
